Mission, Recognition and Projects
The Rowayton Gardeners Club is a member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Its mission is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening in those of all ages, to encourage conservation, civic planting and environmental awareness, to act as a horticultural resource for the Rowayton community, to aid in the preservation of native plants and the management of invasive vegetation and to share in the advantage of teamwork and collaboration.
History
Rowayton Gardeners was organized in 1957 by Mrs. John F. Falsey, Mrs. Lewis E. Gage, and Mrs. Peter Leavitt. These women envisioned a group that would share and experience the joys of gardening. Their vision quickly grew to include civic awareness and a commitment to beautify our community.
The Club’s civic beautification efforts began with its establishment. Club members’ first project was to trim lilacs at the Jenkins boatyard and install and maintain flower boxes atop Bailey beach pavilion. In 1959, the Gardeners purchased terrariums for the Rowayton Library, (for placement in the building on Rowayton Avenue that now houses the Rowayton Arts Center). In 1960-1961, the Gardeners began donating flowers (often from members’ gardens) to the Library on weekly, year-round basis.
In 1966, the Library and the new Community Center moved to Highland Avenue and the Gardeners provided flower arrangements for their dedication that September. (continued)
Meetings & Membership
The Rowayton Gardeners meet on the first Thursday of each month at 9:30 am at the Community Center, unless otherwise designated. Meetings stimulate interest and build expertise in gardening through lectures and workshops on horticulture, flower arranging, environmental issues, and garden design. The Club’s over 100 members are required to assist with projects, fundraisers, and social gatherings.
New members are welcome! (see our membership page for more information about requirements and to access an application).
