Join the Rowayton Gardeners on September 20th for a trip to CT Landmark’s Bellamy-Ferriday House and Gardens in Bethlehem, CT. Built between 1754 and 1767 by Rev. Joseph Bellamy, the house was bought by Henry Ferriday and bequeathed by his only heir, Caroline, to CT Landmarks. The property is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The house features American and European antiques and the gardens have parterres, sweeping lawns and specimen trees, roses and lilacs. A weeping willow tree is said to have stood at the grave of Napoleon.
Caroline Ferriday is the inspiration for the book “The Lilac Girls” by Martha Kelly Hall. She actively supported the Free French movement in WWII sending help for children separated from parents and after the war, led efforts to get US based medical help for Ravensbruck Concentration Camp survivors, women who were used by Nazis for medical experiments. She was awarded the Legion D’Honneur.Field Trip Details:
Meet September 20th at Rowayton Community Center at 8.30 am for departure at 8.45 am. Form carpools (please let us know if you are willing to drive).
10:30 am take a docent-led tour of house and gardens.
12 noon drive 10 miles to Woodbury for lunch (included) at the Marketplace Kitchen & Bar
By agreement with drivers, browse Woodbury after lunch or return directly to Rowayton Community Center around 3:30 pm
Cost: $50 for members, $60 for non-members. Capacity 20.

Non-members’ registration starts Sept 7th
